Chapter & Worse

Classics · Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, 1818

Who killed William in Frankenstein?

The creature killed William, Victor Frankenstein's young brother. He tells Victor so himself.

The creature comes across the boy and strangles him when he learns he is a Frankenstein. He then plants the portrait William was carrying on Justine Moritz, the family's servant.

Justine is found guilty and executed. Victor knows she is innocent and stays silent, because nobody would believe what he'd have to say.

“I grasped his throat to silence him, and in a moment he lay dead at my feet.”
Frankenstein, Chapter 16
“I bent over her and placed the portrait securely in one of the folds of her dress.”
Frankenstein, Chapter 16
