Chapter & Worse

Classics · Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, 1818

Does the monster have a name in Frankenstein?

No. The creature is never given a name. Frankenstein is the name of the man who made him, Victor Frankenstein.

Victor calls him things like the creature, the fiend and the wretch. The creature feels the lack himself, and compares himself to Adam, the first man, whose maker cared for him.

“I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel”
