Chapter & Worse

For novelists on a Chromebook

A Scrivener alternative for your Chromebook

Scrivener runs on Mac, Windows and iPhone or iPad. When we last checked, in November 2026, there was no Chromebook or Android version. Chapter & Worse runs in the browser, so there's nothing to install.

Asking your reader

Where is Pemberley first mentioned?

Reader

Chapter VI, earlier than most people remember. Miss Bingley teases Darcy about marrying Elizabeth, saying her mother “will be always at Pemberley with you.” The fuller Pemberley talk, the library and Bingley offering to buy the place, comes in Chapter VIII.

What's different here

Your desk in any browser

On a Chromebook, a phone or someone else's computer. Sign in with Google and it's there.

It opens without a signal

Once your book has loaded, it lives on your device too. Every version is kept, and what changed between them.

A reader that has read it

A reader with every chapter open, through the Claude you already have. It can't change a word.

Questions only your book can answer

  • Have I described the kitchen two different ways?
  • How many days pass in Part Two?
  • Which character disappears for too long?
  • Did I give two people the same surname?

Moving a book across

Bring it in as a Word file: in Scrivener, compile the manuscript to .docx, then add a book here and choose From a file.

A .scriv project itself can't be read directly.

What comes with it

  • Italics and bold.
  • Chapters, found from your headings.
  • A look at what it found before anything is saved.

What Scrivener does better

The corkboard and the outliner, for moving scenes around as cards.

Compile: turning the manuscript into a formatted ebook or print file. We don't do that.

A one-off price, not a subscription.

Some people run the Windows version on a Chromebook through compatibility software. If you have Scrivener already and that works for you, it's worth trying first.

What you'd get

Nothing to install, on any machine with a browser.

Chapters on one side, notes on characters, places and research on the other. Nothing else on the screen.

A reader that has read the whole book, in any Claude chat.
