Chapter & Worse

Classics · Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen, 1813

Does Mr. Darcy have a first name?

Yes. Mr. Darcy's first name is Fitzwilliam, though almost nobody in the novel uses it.

It comes up twice. Elizabeth remembers hearing about him as a boy, and he signs his full name at the end of the letter he gives her.

It's the same name as his cousin's surname, Colonel Fitzwilliam, which is why a reader can miss it.

“having heard Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy formerly spoken of as a very proud, ill-natured boy”
Pride and Prejudice, Chapter XXV
“FITZWILLIAM DARCY”
Pride and Prejudice, Chapter XXXV
